HistoryThe final period of traditional Japan was the Tokugawa era. This was a time when everything was under the monocracy of the Shogunate, established by Tokugawa Ieyasu. During the year 1603 the emperor gave him the label of the Shogun. Until 1868 this role remained and became known as the Tokugawa Shogunate.

How they took control?The Tokugawa Shogunate took control over Japan by fighting in a series of wars. By participating in these wars they became very strong and powerful. Eventually the went to Edo, where the Emperor lived, and they held him and his family hostage. In order to be released, the emperor made a deal with the daimyo that they would get full power of the land but he would still stay in the position of Emperor.

Why they took control?The Tokugawa Shogunate decided to take control over Japan because at the time the Daimyo's were going through many harmful wars. The Shoguns also believed that the government should be based on a stricter system that has a class hierarchy.
